The city of Sydney is Australia's leading LGBT city and has a thriving gay community in Sydney, which is generally situated in and around the Eastern suburbs and mainly concentrated around the Taylor Square area of Oxford Street. Many hotels and accommodation in Sydney are gay-friendly and happily accept gay men and lesbian couples to stay at the hotel. Sydney is well-known for being open-minded and generally gay-tolerant and there are some Sydney hotels that even feature drag parties and lesbian nights.
It is advisable to book hotel accommodation in advance when staying in Sydney, as Sydney is always a busy gay-friendly city, throughout the year, especially during Sydney's month-long Mardi Gras gay festival. Gay-friendly hotels are readily available in Sydney and are usually excellent value for money.

The highlight of the gay and lesbian year in Sydney is the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade along Oxford Street and Flinders Street in Darlinghurst. Sydney's Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras is a month-long festival, which takes place in late February / early March and draws crowds of over 500,000. This enormous Sydney festival includes a sports carnival, theatre performances, firework displays, light shows, art and film exhibitions, magnificent carnival floats, amazing costumes, colourful parades, market stalls and lots of partying. The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras celebration is a spectacular event and although nudity is forbidden, onlookers must be prepared for some rather unusual sights and lots of bare flesh.
