The Sydney AMP Tower towers more than 980 feet / 300 metres high above the city. With high-speed elevators, regular guided tours and a popular restaurant, the Sydney AMP Tower offers some of the best panoramic views of Sydney. The Sydney AMP Tower, often referred to as the Sydney Centrepoint, is located in Sydney's Central Business District and is one of Sydney's most spectacular landmarks, featuring a popular observation deck. The Sydney Centrepoint tower was built in 1981 and comprises a central spike made up of 46 barrels stacked one above the other, topped with a golden turret which is securely anchored to the ground with 56 cables.

Sydney's breathtaking Parliament House is almost identical to nearby Mint Building and was built in 1816. Featuring elegant architecture, a sandstone façade, two storeys, verandas and a number of important collections, the public gallery in Parliament House is only open on days when Parliament is in session. Originally built as the northern wing of the Rum hospital, Parliament House has been used by the Legislative Council since 1829, making it the oldest continually operated parliament building in the world. Parliament House is situated close to Sydney's Martin Place train station, in the Central Business District of Sydney.

Customs House, in the Circular Quay area of Sydney, has recently been completely renovated and restored. Originally built in 1885, this historic Sydney landmark features a vast interior, which is used for many of Sydney's major festivals, events and exhibitions throughout the Sydney calendar. Other attractions include the Customs House bar, which has spectacular views of Sydney harbour and many musical events in the evenings.

Cadman's Cottage, the oldest house in Sydney, was built in 1816. Located to the south of Parliament is Sydney Hospital, Australia's oldest hospital dating back to the early 19th century. With an impressive sandstone façade, classical Victorian architecture, stone carvings, a beautiful central courtyard, a fountain overlooked by the Florence Nightingale Wing and regular guided tours, Sydney Hospital was home to Australia's first professional nurses and remains one of Sydney's most important historic landmarks.

Built in stages between 1868 and 1889 on the site of an important Sydney burial ground, Sydney Town Hall is another of Sydney's splendid Victorian landmarks and its first foundation stone was actually laid in 1868 by Prince Alfred, son of Queen Victoria. Sydney Town Hall, in central Sydney, features an elaborate interior with ornate Victorian decoration, crystal chandeliers, stained-glass ceiling panels, and an enormous pipe organ. The grand Centennial Hall at Sydney Town Hall, which was originally the home of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra until they moved to the Sydney Opera House in the 1970s, is now used for large meetings, concerts and Sydney events.

The combination of grand, gothic-style house, outbuildings, harbour views and twelve hectares of formal gardens and grounds, places Vaucluse House high on Sydney's must see list. Dating from 1803, it was later extended by William Charles Wentworth - father of the Australian constitution. The interiors have been restored to the period when he lived here with his wife and numerous children (1827-53 and again in 1861-62) and include many objects, which belonged to the family. The adjoining tea rooms are also worth a visit.

The Victoria Barracks, in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs, began in 1841. This historic, late-Georgian complex took seven years to build and houses the oldest surviving army barracks throughout Australia. The work was supervised by Major George Barney, commanding the Royal Engineers, and incorporates sandstone quarried on the site. Free guided tours are lead by volunteers once a week and comprise a thirty-minute band presentation, a one-hour tour of the complex and an optional visit to the Army Museum. The latter focuses upon the history of the armed forces in New South Wales and displays such objects as weaponry, costume and paper artefacts.
